FAILURE OF DIESEL ALTERNATOR

Taylor Marine were instructed by Owners'  H&M Underwriters to investigate a reported failure of the port inboard diesel alternator. The vessel had undergone a standard refit at a local ship repair yard, and during running of the diesel alternator, smoke was observed emitting from the crankcase.  Investigations concluded that slackening and re-tensioning of connecting rod bolts had contributed to the impending failure.
