OXIDATION DAMAGE TO STEEL CARGO

Taylor Marine were appointed by lawyers representing Cargo Underwriters to review documentation and provide opinion as to the cause of oxidation damage to a cargo of wrapped steel coils. Following investigation it was determined that shifting of the stow on board the vessel had caused damage to the outer packing and internal protective coating and film of the metal which served as a barrier between the environment and the underlying metal, therefore increasing the risk of corrosion.
