Taylor Marine were appointed on behalf of Chemical products manufacturer to investigate a reported explosion of steel drums containing Isopropylamine whilst in storage in an open yard at a chemical supply facility. Our surveyors attended the facility to inspect the storage conditions whereupon it was found that a number of steel drums had been stored outside and exposed to direct sunlight, contrary to advice given in the products MSDS. A number of drums stored outside exhibited signs of bulging of the lids compared to those stored inside and therefore it was found that exposure to heat / sunlight was those most likely cause of rupture of the drums.
